Joomla includes a robust user management system with user groups, access levels, and granular permissions (ACL). This guide covers Joomla-specific user administration for sites, stores, and multi-site setups.

Joomla User System Overview

User Hierarchy

Joomla organizes users by User Groups with different Access Levels and Actions:

Default User Groups:

  1. Public - All visitors (logged in or not)
  2. Guest - Not logged in
  3. Registered - Basic logged-in users
  4. Author - Can create and edit own content
  5. Editor - Can edit all content
  6. Publisher - Can edit and publish content
  7. Manager - Backend access, manage content
  8. Administrator - Full backend access except Super Admin functions
  9. Super Users - Complete site control

Custom Groups:

  • VirtueMart Customer
  • J2Store Customer
  • Community Builder Member

Access Levels

Default Access Levels:

  • Public - Everyone can view
  • Guest - Only logged-out users
  • Registered - Only logged-in users
  • Special - Authors and above
